If you find that you are suffering from work related stress on the job, that is considered occupational. And sometimes this happens when you're given a lot of work to do, or your managers push you to meet deadlines. This can also happen if you are feeling overwhelmed, overworked, if you don't eat enough, or you're not able to get time away from work and exercise.
There are different factors to dealing with this level of work related anxiety, as it can cause physical, mental and emotional symptoms. For example, if you find that when you are getting ready to go into work, you feel a heightened sense of heart palpitations, or if your blood pressure goes up, this can be a sign that you're finding it difficult to deal with the load and the pressure that you have on you. Sometimes if we feel an overwhelming sense of responsibility, we may find it difficult to balance the loads that we have, like trying to come in early, stay late, take the kids to their activities and still get enough sleep to do it all over again the next day.
Other areas where this can come into play is if you are working with people who stress you out, where you might feel like they are putting added pressures on you, or they have difficult personalities to deal with. Sometimes in work environments, there are people who make our jobs feel more difficult to do, as they may antagonize us, bully us, or challenge us in ways that are inappropriate in a natural work setting.
For example, if you have someone on a job site who always makes fun of you, this type of behavior should not be tolerated, because it can influence how you feel about your job and coming to work every day. Or in another case, you may have someone who makes you feel like you have to do all of their work as well as yours.
Physical symptoms that can be associated with this include heart palpitations, high blood pressure, headaches and migraines, feeling dizzy, feelings of lethargy, feeling anxious, mental illness and depression.
Emotional conditions that can develop from this include depression, a feeling of uselessness, helpless, feeling less than empowered, and feeling with you don't want to go to work or to go on in life.
Ways that this can be alleviated include a mediator who can speak with you and the person you're having an issue with, changing a job, or physical activity that can help to release stress for you. Stress relievers can come in the form of exercise which helps to release endorphins that promote happy thoughts, or you can ask your doctor for a medication that might help. Over the counter herbal supplements like St. John’s Wort might help, or you can try lifestyle changes such as changing your diet, adding in more exercise, meditation, yoga, and stretching to your life, or taking a vacation or well needed break.
