ON
SUNDAY, AUGUST 1, 2010, Owatonna Lodge and Ohio grand lodge
held a picnic at
THE WEST WOODS PARK AT THE DEER RUN SHELTER
The picnic was a lot of fun. There was a covered shelter,
picnic tables, an extra large grill and games for the adults
and kids. Brothers brought their own chair when they sat in
the sun. The Lodge supplied hot dogs, hamburgers, pop, ice,
and dessert was brought by individuals. The Chief was Sir
Sid Wakser, working on the hot grill to supply the hot food
to all. Grand Chancellor William “Bill” Kerlin, Jr., was in
attendance.

Detroit
Lodge No 55 held an evening with Samantha Sinai and Friends.
Samantha Sinai is a 20 year student who was the recipient of
a Knights of Pythias Scholarship and is presently a student
at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music She performed
with some of her friends from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
before a large turnout of Pythians and their wives..

PDGC
Sir Jerry Kalinsky presents a plaque to Mr David Jaspen,
manager of Sam's Club in Coral Spring, in recognition of the
support they have given to the Pythian Youth Foundation for
many years.

The
Grand Lodge of New York was recognized by Nassau County at a
recent ceremony at Burns Park in Massapequa.
County Supervisor John Venditto, a member for many years of
Mid Island Lodge presented a Proclamation to Grand
Chancellor Michael Sukenick surrounded by members of the
Grand Lodge and Grand Temple of New York.

On
August 19th, Supreme Outer Guard Sir Bruce H. Brown
presented the 2010 Supreme Chancellor's Certificate of Honor
to 4 members of the Stingrays Chapter #25 on behalf of
outgoing Supreme Chancellor Dan Cowan. Receiving the award
were: Scribe David Granville, Regent David Rudd, Marshall
Alvizar Santiago and Sergz Santiago. The award was given in
recognition of their service to the community. The four
young men are among only 7 Pythians in the Domain of South
Carolina and the first Junior Pythians to receive the award.
The previous recipients in South Carolina were: Garland
Harman of Myrtle Lodge #3, Patrick Labbe of Stonewall-Jasper
#6 and Wayne Smith of Myrtle Lodge #3.

The
Knights of Pythias Diabetes Research
Association in conjunction with the Grand Lodge Sports
Committee held
its 6th annual PDSC David Applebaum Golf Outing to Benefit
the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
Over 140 Golfers and Non Golfers arrived at the Riis Park
Pitch & Putt Golf Course to enjoy a beautiful day of Golf,
Fun and fundraising. This year the Golf outing made a net
amount in excess of $12,000 for the day and presented its'
first check to the JDRF in the amount of $5,000 with an
additional check to be presented to the JDRF at a date to be
determined. This was the sixth annual golf outing held and
over these 6 years, the Outing has raised in excess of
$100,000 which was given to Diabetes Research.

The Annual New England Pythian Memorial Service was held on
Sunday, August 1 at Cathedral of the Pines in Rindge, NH.
Massachusetts was the host domain this year.
This year's service was written by PDSC Frederick B.
Steinberg; it was completed just months before his passing
after a long battle with cancer. Brother Fred was a
dedicated and hard working Pythian for the domain of
Massachusetts, and a long time supporter of the Cathedral.
Taking part in the service were GC Samuel Savage; SJ Audrey
J. Wetterwald; PGC David B. Prager, GVC; PSR Marjorie
Anderson, GJ; GMA Marc Cadoff. The service was dedicated to
the memory of Brother Fred.
Following the service Massachusetts dedicated a granite
bench in memory of Bother Fred, a dedication ceremony that
was written by SR Allen S. Morris, GS. Taking part in the
dedication were, from Massachusetts: GC Samuel Savage; GVC
David B. Prager; GS Allen S. Morris, SR; GMA Marc Cadoff;
GOG William Prager; PSC Alfred A. Saltzman; PSR John H.
Adams; PSR Rudolph Medeiros; PGC Richard B. Albert; PC
Maurice Marcus; PC Edmund Wetterwald; GC Lori Anderson, SR;
GJ Marjory Anderson; GJ; SJ Audrey Wetterwald; PSR Geraldine
Hunter; and PGC Barbara Hauge. Many other Pythians from New
England, including SVC Edwin H. Wright; and his wife, PSC
Joyce Wright, of New Hampshire, joined in the dedication
ceremony. Also present for the dedication was Brother Fred's
widow, Roberta; his daughter, Andrea, and her husband, Ron;
and Fred's two granddaughters.

Bear
attack survivor Jay Vinden
Jay Vinden, 57, the Grand Vice Chancellor of the Domain of
British Columbia, was sleeping in a lean-to shelter around 7
a.m. in an area known as Taylor Flats at the west end of
Sproat Lake, near Port Alberni, when a bear started clawing
at him.
"I heard a snort, and I rolled over, and there was a black
bear six inches from my face. I could feel his breath,"
Vinden told CTV News from his Nanaimo hospital bed, where he
is undergoing consultation to reconstruct a large piece of
missing scalp.

Jesse
Edwards, Sophomore from Winchester High School, captured
first place in the Knights of Pythias State Poster Contest
about "Volunteerism". Jesse made a poster that depicted
himself delivering groceries to shut-ins. It was pretty neat
to see the poster artist in the poster itself! Jesse was
presented the winners certificate and a $500 check by Grand
Chancellor Tim Loughmiller. Tim and his wife, PGC Lori, were
present at Crescens Lodge #33 for a celebration along with
Jesse's Mother and Brother. Also present were long time
friend of the contest and Crescens Lodge, art instructor
Dale Hardacre of Winchester High School and his wife.
Indiana will be well represented in the Supreme contest.
Jesse's sister placed 2nd in the Supreme contest two years
ago.

Keith
Stooksberry, SMA, met with the Grand Lodge Officers and
other Knights of Italy during a visit to Italy at the end of
June. He presented the Supreme Lodge program and gave the
Supreme Chancellor's coins to 14 Brother Knights.

Team

resulted in raising over Five Thousand Dollars for the

On
June 3rd, Deputy Supreme Chancellor for South Carolina
Bernard J. McNulty, Jr. and Past Grands Chancellor Clarence
Kuykendall presented the Supreme Chancellor's coin to
members of Stingrays Chapter # 25 in Charleston SC on behalf
of Supreme Chancellor Dan Cowan in recognition of the work
that the Junior Chapter is doing to promote the order and
Pythian values.

Pythian
Lodge #26, Longview, Texas recently complete its’ local area

Mid
Island Lodge #828 recently held two events. They made a
presentation to Rebuilding Together, an organization helping
disabled persons on Long Island. Their presentation was used
for the construction of a much needed ramp for wheelchairs.

The other event was the First Knights of Pythias Food Drive
on Long Island. The food that was collected outside
Waldbaums in Massapequa was delivered to the local food
bank. More than a dozen members of the lodge were involved
in this all day event.

The
highest award a member of the Knights of Pythias can earn is
to be made A Knight of the Golden Spur.
This honor was given to PC Sir Sidney Schneider of
Covered Bridge Lodge, Domain of New Jersey and Genesis
Lodge, of the Domain of New York.
Sir Sidney has been a member of the order for 78
years. At age
99, he is the elder statesman of actively engaged lodge
officers in the Supreme Domain.
Sid was surprised at the ritual presentation of the
Spur by his two sons, who came from out of town, on the
occasion of his 99 birthday. The ceremony which was held at
the Covered Bridge Ballroom was attended by friends and
Pythians from throughout the state.

Boynton
Beach Community High School graduating senior Taelor May,

Lake Worth Lodge #211 and the Grand Lodge of Florida also
presented a citizenship award to Roland Michel. The two
graduating seniors received the awards for their
citizenship, involvement in school and community activities,
extra effort to improve their grade scores, good attendance
and demonstrating the Knights of Pythias' principles of
Friendship, Charity and Benevolence.

Domain of New Jersey held their Annual Miniature Golf
Tournament in support of the American Cancer Society, on May
23 in Englishtown.

Pythian
Lodge #26 Longview, Texas and D.O.K.K. Temple 269 recently
completed it‘s annual reading contest for 1st and 2nd grades
students in three area schools. 850 students participated
this year.

On
May 8, 2010 members of the Knights of Pythias Junior Order
from Charleston SC held a service project. The members
included David Glanville (Scribe), David Rudd (Regent),
Alvizar Santiago (Marshall) and Sergz Santiago
(Vice-Regent) of the Stingrays Chapter #25 in Charleston SC.
Also participating was Patrick C. Labbe, the Chapter's
Knights Advisor. The members visited
and did yard work for Ollie Rath of Walterboro, SC. Ms Rath
is a 91 year old shut in and Hospice patient. The members
did yard work and clearing of overgrown brush in her yard.

On
Saturday, April 24th, Tucson Lodge #9 gathered at the White
Stallion Ranch and presented a $1000.00 check to the
Northwest YMCA, for their swim program, in attendance was
the NW Fire District chief and several members of the NW
YMCA. The sole reason of this donation is to teach kids the
safety of the water, and hopefully prevent a drowning of a
child. The White Stallion Ranch gracefully donated the space
for this presentation, and than furnished a great lunch for
us all. All in all there were more than 25 members, wives,
NW YMCA Staff, District Fire Chief, and family in
attendance. A special thanks goes out to Brother Howard
Guralnick of Tucson Lodge # 9 for getting this all set up,
and to the True Family, owners of the White Stallion Ranch
for providing such a great location for us. Brother Howard
also presented a certificate of appreciation from Tucson
Lodge # 9 to the White Stallion Ranch Assisting in this
presentation from Tucson Lodge # 9 were PSR Don Appleton,
PGC Red Hollander, PSC Harris Breit, PC Jim Hurst, Jim

KNIGHTS
OF PYTHIAS OF FLORIDA
PRESENTS 600 SPECIAL OLYMPIC MEDALS
The Knights of Pythias of Florida presented to all Special
Olympic Athletes a “Knights of Pythias-Special Olympics
Athlete Recognition Medal” on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at
the John I. Leonard High School in Greenacres, FL.
According to Past Grand Chancellor of Florida Sir Irving
Margulies Co-Chair for the Knights of Pythias, over 2000
Athletes, Parents, Volunteers, Coaches and Special Olympics’
Staff were present for these very exciting 2010 Area 10
Summer Games. Athletes and supporters from five (5) counties
were present; Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, Indian and St.
Lucie took part in the games. Throughout the day, Special
Olympians particiaped in various events such as, Track,
Field, Bocce, Tennis, Volleyball, Soccer, Cycling, etc.
Lunch was provided for all by Buds Chicken & Seafood
Caterers.
The opening ceremony was lead by Rich Fleming, the Palm
Beach County Coordinator for the Special Olympics, who
introduced the many participating groups, supporters and
guests, including retired Minnesota Vikings Wide Receiver
Anthony “AC” Carter (number 81). Carter is a resident of
Palm Beach County and has been a supporter of the Special
Olympics for many years. He assisted in presenting the
Pythian Medals to all of the Athletes and took many pictures
with them and others saying, “All Special Olympic Athletes
are winners.” The Knights of Pythias presented 600 medals to
all of the Special Olympic Athletes. The medals were worn
with much pride by all of the Athletes and such received
continued responses such as “Thank you very much” and “These
are beautiful medals.” A big Thank You goes to Pythian
Brothers Jules Meyers and Tilden Levine, who also assisted
in the Medal presentations. Also thanks to the Pythian
Committee Co-Chairs PSC Sir Arthur Block of Mass., PDGC Eli
Levine and PGC Bernard Gissen who assisted in the planning
of this special day. The Knights of Pythias credo:
Friendship, Charity and Benevolence were well practiced on
this Special Olympics day and the Knights look forward to
supporting many other Special Olympic events throughout

The
Grand Lodge of Massachusetts made a donation of more than
$4,200.00 to the New England Sinai Hospital on Sunday
morning, April 11 during the Annual Voting Members' Clinic.
The donation was for three state of the art wheel chairs,
two of which were being used at the time the attached
picture was taken. Those in attendance did receive a
demonstration on the chair you see to the far left in the
picture - it is quite the chair.
